Purple Martin Time

Purple Martin Time

Now is the time to put up your purple martin houses!  Just put mine up about a week ago and I’ve got martins visiting and looking over the houses I put up for them.

The picture shows an 18 room martin house.  I have two 12 room houses up at the edge of our lake.  Keep the houses at least 15 – 25 feet from trees and install a predator guard on your pole.

Take a look at our site:   www.birdseedbar.comfor all your Purple Martin products!  They are fun to watch and also eat mosquitoes.

CARDINALS BRING CHRISTMAS CHEER

December 5, 2009
www.birdseedbar.com
www.birdseedbar.com

Nothing beats the site of a brilliant red Cardinals especially during the Christmas Season!  They look like bright ornaments clinging to your trees or bird feeders, especially on snow covered background.  Northern Cardinals are faithful visitors to your feeders and are one of the easiest species to attract.  It is very widespread throughout the east and southern regions.  I know here in Florida, they visit my feeders year round.  It is also the state bird for seven states and also the mascot for several professional teams.

The Cardinals beak is reddish and triangular in shape, contrasted by a black throat on the male.  Their name comes from the red robes worn by Roman Catholic cardinals.  The female lacks the brilliant red plumage of the male.  She is more brownish overall with reddish highlights on the wings and tail.  The crested head is a field mark for adults and may be missing or shaggy on the juveniles.
Cardinals live in a variety of habitats  including woodland edges, thickets, forests, swamps, urban areas and gardens.  They may be seen alone most of the time, but sometimes they will appear in small groups.  During the mating season the male will feed seeds to the female.  Their diet consists mainly of seeds and berries.  During the breeding season they will also feed on insects.  They prefer feeding on or near the ground and are often the first to arrive at feeders in the morning and the last to leave at the end of the day.  Since they are a larger bird, they prefer larger flat perching areas such as tray feeders.
Here at www.birdseedbar.com, we have all types of feeders including tray feeders for your cardinals.  We also carry a wide variety of bird houses, books on birds, DVD’s, bird baths and all the accessories you need!  Give us a visit!
